Financial Support

Financial Support

Financial insecurity is one of the most immediate pressures placed on a family when a child is diagnosed with cancer. One parent has often to stop work in order to provide nursing care for a child, and the resulting drop in household income can leave a family in a difficult financial position. We provide three non-means tested grant-based schemes for families – Home Heating scheme, Road Miles and Travel for Treatment all of which offer practical and immediate support to help alleviate this problem, they are delivered quickly, efficiently and willingly.

Home Heating Scheme

The cost of maintaining an even, ambient temperature within a household, where a child or a young person is ill or immuno-depressed following cancer treatment, adds considerably to household expenses.  Through our Home Heating Scheme, we provide a one-off annual payment of £100 towards home heating costs for families who are nursing a child or a young person up to the age of 21, who has been diagnosed with, and is receiving treatment for cancer. The grant is open to all and is not subject to any form of means testing.  To apply for this grant, contact the Family Team on 028 9073 0688

Road Miles Scheme

The Road Miles scheme provides direct financial assistance to families who are nursing a child or a young person up to the age of 21, who has been diagnosed with, and is receiving treatment for cancer.  The scheme gives families a grant based on the equivalent of fifteen return journeys from their home to their Belfast treatment hospital. The grant is paid to parents/guardians in the form of fuel tokens, which can be exchanged for petrol or diesel.  The Road Miles Scheme grant is not subject to any form of means testing and is paid on a 3-monthly cycle to all families who apply.
To apply for the Road Miles scheme, contact the Family Team on 028 9073 0688.

Travel for Treatment

The Travel for Treatment grant supports families caring for a child with cancer, when they have to leave Northern Ireland for treatment.
