Read On
ReadOn is the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children’s sponsored reading campaign.
During ReadOn week pupils are sponsored to read their favourite books in the knowledge that funds raised will provide practical and emotional support to local children, teenagers and young adults with cancer and their families.
In the last 11 years, hundreds of primary and post-primary schools have helped raise a staggering £680,000 for local families.
How Read On Works
ReadOn is our popular sponsored reading campaign which can take place any week in the academic calendar. Pupils simply read books in return for sponsorship from family and friends.
This event helps schools to boost their literacy levels, and allows pupils to read for fun while supporting children and young people living with cancer.
Organising ReadOn is easy, with step by step instructions provided, plus every pupil who takes part receives a bookmark and a pencil as a thank you!
The benefits of taking part in ReadOn
- Pupils are motivated to read for pleasure, hopefully inspiring a life-long love of reading.
- Parents are happy to see their children reading more and families are encouraged to read together at home.
- Schools have reported that more pupils visit the library and lending levels increase.
- Pupils are inspired to read more as all the money collected is spent locally, supporting children living with cancer.
Read On Matters
This is how your school’s support will make a difference:
- £30 Could pay for an experienced Family Support Worker – to provide a family caring for a child with cancer with practical and emotional support.
- £50 will allow a child with cancer to go for a weekend break to ‘Narnia’, the charity’s log cabin at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, helping them to rebuild their confidence and allowing them to meet other children living with cancer.
- £200 will provide a Home Heating grant for a family nursing a child with cancer, helping them to keep the family home at a constantly warm temperature during their child’s treatment.
- £300 will pay for a family of 4-6 to spend a fully-catered break in Shimna Valley, Newcastle.
- £500 will provide a Travel for Treatment grant for families that have to travel outside Northern Ireland for specialist treatment for their child.
- £1,000 will allow up to 24 children diagnosed with cancer and their siblings to attend a life-skills residential in Narnia, helping them to regain self-confidence, develop personal coping strategies and make lasting friendships.
