Adam is a National Hero!

Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children is delighted that one of our young people has won a prestigious award for his selfless charity work.

Twelve year old Adam Kerr, from Lisburn took home the National Hero Award at the recent UK Family Heroes Awards, which were held at a lavish event in London in October.  The award not only recognises Adam’s amazing charity work but also the emotional support he has given to others in need.

Adam’s mum, Gaye Kerr, says her son’s achievements were born out of his own personal tragedy following the death of his younger sister, Helen who passed away aged 3.  In 2005 Helen was diagnosed with a condition called HLH, a rare blood disorder and although she had responded well to chemotherapy she later needed a bone marrow transplant.  Adam then aged 6, was a match and was determined to help his little sister.   He donated his bone marrow to her on 24th June, his birthday and although his bravery shone through Helen sadly passed way two months later.

Adam’s loss spurred him on to raise money for cancer charities including Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children and in 2010 he raised over £1,180 for NICFC by organising a concert at his primary school, Friends’ Prep in Lisburn. He also provides emotional support to family and friends, and has spent the last few years counselling and encouraging children in a similar situation.

Speaking of his achievement Adam’s proud mum Gaye says,

“I wasn’t sure he would win but when they announced his name, he was so happy I cried my heart out.  On top of all this Adam helps his younger brother Brian who has fanconi anaemia and now receives two transfusions a week,  Adam has been truly amazing with Brian and a great emotional support to me.  He’s done more emotionally than money ever could.”
