London Fashion Week Backs Sun Bed Ban

Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children (NICFC) applauds London Fashion Week’s recent move to ban models participating in the celebrated event from using sunbeds.

The “No Sun Bed” policy has been adopted by 11 of the UK’s top modelling agencies including Storm, Elite and Premier and encourages models to embrace their natural skin tone, or opt for a spray tan.

Liz Osborne, Director of Services with NI Cancer Fund for Children welcomed the action,

“Recent research has highlighted that skin cancer is the third most common cancer among teenagers and young people (15-24 years old) and the number of young people developing skin cancer is increasing.

NI Cancer Fund for Children recognises that sunburn during childhood is a particular risk factor and exposure to the sun increases the risk of developing skin cancer in later life. To help educate children on the importance of sun safety, we organise an annual SunSmart campaign with nursery and primary schools across NI.

Introduced six years ago, the Hats & Shades Day is a fun interactive campaign which has helped deliver vital sun safety messages to 21,000 local children, helping them to become more SunSmart.

It is encouraging to see some of the UK’s leading modelling agencies take a positive stance during such an eminent event like London Fashion Week. At NICFC, we welcome any preventative measures such as the “No Sun Bed” policy as it sends a positive message to young people across Northern Ireland.”

This is one fashion trend NICFC are keen to support!
