Young Shoulders

Children and young people who have parent diagnosed with cancer often feel lonely, anxious, scared or sad. If you are in this situation and have experienced these feeling we can help!

Through friendship and support the Young Shoulders Programme can:

  1. Introduce you to other children and young people who are in a similar situation and share the same fears.
  2. Bring you on a residential break at Narnia Log Cabin, Shimna Valley Village.
  3. Involve you in fun and exciting activities that can help you become more confident, for example: deep sea fishing trips, sailing trips, bar-b-que days.

Hi, my name is Louise

My mummy is sick and I am really worried, but the friends I met through the charity are helping me through it. I really enjoy going to Narnia. It’s good to talk to other people who understand how I feel. I hope my mum gets better as, I am scared of losing her and being lonely.

Hi, my name is Michael

Since dad became ill, my life has been really hard and scary. It has also been really sad to see my daddy sick. I have to do everything for myself. When I go to Narnia, I meet lots of other people who have an ill parent, and we get to do lots of cool stuff that my dad can’t take me to anymore like bowling, trips to the cinema and fishing trips.

If you would like to meet children like Louise and Michael please call Gareth on 028 9080 5599 or email gareth@nicfc.com

TACT

Coping with a parent who is living with cancer and trying to carry on life as normal is a difficult task. You may find you are constantly trying to juggle a balancing act between home and school life.

You could have worries or concerns about school and exams which you feel that you can’t share with your parents, as you don’t want to worry them. The Young Shoulders Programme can help. By meeting other young people who are experiencing the same difficulties, you can build a strong network of support. For further information contact Gareth on 028 9080 5599 or email gareth@nicfc.com

18+

At this stage of your life, you may be ready to move out of home, go to university or start on your career path. When one of your parents is seriously ill, this isn’t always possible. You could be worried about leaving your ill parent and you may have caring responsibilities which need to be fulfilled. The 18+ group within the Young Shoulders programme will give you strength, time out with friends and the support to help you cope.

Parents

The Young Shoulders Programme supports children and young people aged 8-21 years living with a parent or legal guardian who has received a diagnosis of cancer. The programme has been specially developed to tackle issues such as separation anxiety, fears for the future, coping with school and family life, and the stresses attached to difficult caring roles.

Through self-awareness, education and lifeskills residential training and activities, at our purpose built log cabin, Narnia, in the Shimna Valley Village, Newcastle; the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children, (NICFC) aims to provide coping strategies to help children and young people deal with the reality of living with a parent diagnosed with cancer and all that this implies. Our focus is on helping young people deal with issues positively and successfully.

Fun social networking allows young people to meet others living through similar experiences and importantly make friends who understand.

If you know a young person who would benefit from taking part in this programme, and want more information, simply contact Gareth Beattie on 028 9080 5599 or email gareth@nicfc.com for further information.
